European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
